closed encounters

I’m taking a typography class taught by a very cool teacher who suggested that we visit some art museums and local galleries in the area. So a friend and I went to some spaces in La Jolla last Friday.

Unfortunately, majority of the museum was closed because they were working on a new exhibit. But, we did take a walk through the sculpture garden and checked out the Photography in Mexico exhibit for free!

Going Out of Business by Mel Bochner

The Quint Contemporary Art is just a flew blocks away from the MOCA. The Troublesome Exhibit, which sadly ends tomorrow,  featured some cool pieces including two of Matthew Brandt’s works made entirely out of bubble-gum.

Really enjoyed Girardoni’s piece which incorporates color, light, and sound.

Shadows by Marcos Ramirez Erre
After the gallery, we had a late lunch at IKEA and both ordered a salad, hazelnut chocolate, and swedish meatballs.

I also scored a $5 hamper!

Speaking of art and design, I visited SDSU for Tom Sachs‘ lecture about two weeks ago! Overall, it was a really insightful talk and it was great to know the reasons behind most of his grand projects, especially like that of the “Space Program”. He even wore the Nike Mars Yard shoes he designed!
EdwinHimself put together a post of 5 valuable quotes from that night. Check them out.

Sunshine

After being locked up at home aka having no car, I finally went out and got a good dose of happiness! I spent the whole afternoon with Marco, a very close friend of mine. We had lunch at AjiSen Ramen – a little Japanese restaurant in Tamuning. I had the Karaage Curry Ramen and man, it was really good

.

We drove to Westin to check up on our other friend Nathan. He took us up to the top floor and we hung out inside the Presidential Suite (wow!). It was nice having the trio together for a bit. Laughs everywhere, man!

Helped Marco picked out his very first pair of Janoskis at Kicks/HI. Then we sauntered over to Stussy Guam and I bought this Tiger Camo S-Carabiner!

Tumon Tourist life

Ended the day with Mt. Lam Lam! A must to get the Shave Ice Surprise – Two/Three syrup flavours with Vanilla ice cream inside! I got Peach and Blue Raspberry syrup on mine.

Also, here is a new track from Little Dragon. A good summer tune!

Home Sweet Home

Hello, everyone! I just arrived from Manila this morning and am back on Guam for the summer. I’m very excited to see my family and close friends. My week in the Philippines was very relaxing, but I was eager to fly home quick. I took a little nap this morning and then ran some errands with my mom. We, along with my sister, had dinner at one of my favourite restaurants – Capricciosa!

One of my favourite dishes – their classic lasagna. Gooey goodness~

Ma!

Anyways, I hope you all are enjoying your first weeks of summer. If not, I wish you the best of luck during your final weeks of school!

FAVOURITES 01

Hi all, it’s Jireh here! So, I decided to try something new for the blog and start a “Monthly Favourites” edition; that way, the blog doesn’t seem to be dead for a really long time. Fall is shortly ending, and with the on and off weather San Diego has been having, I’m pumped for the transition into winter. I’m a little down in the dumps for the remaining days of October, so I thought it’d be a good time to compile some favourite things of mine that I’ve been loving for the past few months! Let’s start with some products…

MAC Taupe in matte. I love brown/nude shades, so this is a great addition to my growing lipstick collection. Also, a tip for putting lipstick on is to apply primer (I use Too Faced Eyeshadow Insurance) before applying color!

H&M basics – brown sweater great to throw on over button downs and a loose pocket tee for casual days. Sorry for the wrinkles!

HEMPZ Original Body Moisturizer – a fragrant lotion that actually soothes skin? Get outta town! This lotion is the holy grail. It is also THC-drug free, paraben and gluten free, AND 100% vegan. Ordered mine through Amazon since my mom told me the shop back home is out of stock for them!

L’Occitane Hand Cream for on the go! Great scent and the consistency is perfect. A bit thicker than HEMPZ, but it does work wonders.

Rimmel Lasting Finish Pro in Hot Cocoa nail lacquer – cute dusty rose color for the fall season.

Li Hing flavoured Sour Watermelon candy! Mom sent these over and these are honestly one of my favourite things to eat when I was back home. Bringing some island flavor to the mainland!

STASH Black Earl Grey Tea – I was never an avid fan of tea, coffee, or soda (very rare to see me drink any of these), but I figured I needed some sort of caffeine in my system so I opted for tea and this is one of the flavours I used to order at Cup & Saucer. Just add 1/2 teaspoon of sugar and some milk and I’m good to go.

ALBUM of the MONTH

Now in the span of 1 month, I could be into so many albums and artists, but the one album that I really enjoyed this month is IIOI’s “Proper”. One can still distinguish Evan’s unique style, yet notice some nice progression. Give it a listen for yourself!

MOVIE of the MONTH

October is all about horror films, but the only movie I look forward to watching during this month is Hocus Pocus. (Image from Tumblr)

TV SHOWS of the MONTH

It’s honestly hard to choose only one favourite tv show for this month! Parks and Recreation came back for another great season. FX’s new show American Horror Story is a bit weird…but weird is good! I enjoy the characters Tate and Violet a lot. And last but not least, season 2 of How to Make It in America premiered a few weeks ago and I couldn’t have been any more excited. I’ve been hooked since the first season aired when I was a senior in high school. Bryan Greenberg has never looked so good! (Images from various Tumblrs)

Skateboarder Walker Ryan’s A Day in the Life: Thailand Edition

PERSON of the MONTH

Evan Tetreault. A great photographer and a well-dressed man. Check his stuff out!

Anyways, I hope you enjoyed this post! xx

PORTO’S

The next morning, we said our goodbyes and headed back to San Diego. But we planned a short trip to Downey to get some pastries from Porto’s!

I (Jireh) ordered a box of Cheese Rolls, Guava/Guava & Cheese strudels, and a Chocolate Danish.

Via’s Crème brûlée!

It’s a shame there are only 3 branches in all of California, but hopefully we’ll meet again!

EN FRANÇAIS

Later that day, we drove back to downtown LA to meet up with our friends Jackie and Kiana at the famous Bottega Louie’s for a mid-afternoon snack!

L-R: Pistachio, Classic, Vanilla, Earl Grey, Pumpkin
I’ve tried macaroons back home at a pastries convention and they were made by our friend’s pastry chef father (who is French!) and they were delicious. I was excited to reunite with a few of these colourful gems, and I felt right back in heaven. My personal favourite is Pistachio and Earl Grey comes in second with its pretty golden specks!

Via bought a bigger box to bring home for Kitty!

We also spotted Olivia Lo of Lust for Life!

Olivia, Via’s your number one fan!

After Bottega, we had dinner at Chipotle and all headed to The Grove for some window shopping! Along the way, however, we were stopped by this man who wanted a picture with us….

You’re Welcome, dude! We ended the night by hanging around Jackie’s beautiful apartment in downtown, and then drove back to Westwood to sleep.

It was a great and eventful first full day in LA!

THE BORDER X LOS ANGELES

Via and I were finally able to complete our trip up to Los Angeles the second weekend of September! Here is Part 1 of our first full day in the big city.

We had brunch at Lemonade in Beverly.

I (Jireh) ordered the Mac-n-Cheese soup with a Peach Ginger lemonade! Al dente elbow pasta in a very rich and creamy sauce. I’m not a big fan of lemonade in general, but when I read Peach Ginger, I thought it’d be a little less sour but I was a bit disappointed. Overall, I’d say it’s a cute place!

I (Via) got the Chicken Chili soup, and I really liked how it was still full of flavor even if it didn’t contain any beans. I also had the Blueberry Mint lemonade to wash down the chili–a bit too sweet, but very refreshing especially because the heat was intense that day.  When it comes to food, I am easy to please, so I was happy with my brunch altogether.
