Visual Acoustics (dir. Eric Bricker) is a magnificent documentary about Julius Shulman – the man who pioneered Southern California’s Modernist Architecture with his photographs.
A man of wit and passion for the environment, he worked along side architects such as Frank Gehry (Disney Hall), Albert Frey (Frey House), and Richard Neutra (Kauffman Residence). Most of his photographs were taken in black and white to emphasize the contrasting geometric patterns found in these modern homes. Some say his photographs, carefully taken with the concept of a “one-point perspective”, make these houses seem even more beautiful than they are in real life; that his prints actually sell these buildings in the market.
One of his famous photographs (seen above in the poster) is of the Stahl House – Case Study House #22 designed by Pierre Koenig in 1960. It sits atop the Hollywood Hills (known to be an unbuildable site) overlooking the city of Los Angeles.

The Stahl House is a popular set for film and fashion shoots even to this day. It was used in movies such as Galaxy Quest, Playing By Heart, and The Big Lebowski as Jackie Treehorn’s home. It was also featured in the video game Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas as a safehouse!
If you’re interested in photography and architecture – heck, if you’re interested in art in general – I HIGHLY suggest you watch this documentary. Shulman is now a very big inspiration of mine. Sure he’s worked with big names in the architecture world, but in the end, he’s really an ordinary guy who is very passionate about what he does! And with that, I’m going to make it one of my life goals to visit at least one of the houses he has shot.

The other night, I watched a French film titled “Un amour de jeunesse” or “Goodbye First Love”. To make the long story short, it’s about 15 year old Camille who struggles to part ways with her older boyfriend Sullivan as he wants to travel and explore the world. She is devastated at first, but during his 8-year absence she becomes a mature woman with ambitions. Camille is studying to become an architect and in one scene, she goes to Copenhagen to visit the Kastrup Søbad or the Kastrup Sea Baths. I instantly fell in love with this structure. I think it’s so beautifully designed and the architects’ take on open air pools show great innovation.
It was constructed in 2004 and was designed by White arkitekter. The project includes the main building on water, the new beach and separate lavatories.
The circular shape gives the structure its form and purpose from wind protection to interior concentration. It is built out of Azobe wood which is known for its durability in salt water.
What’s most important about this project is that it really caters to the public. Free admission and open to the public at all times, it even has ramps for those who are less mobile and who want to take interest in seeing the building as a whole. There are also facilities for various activities whether it may be for exercise or for a peaceful dip.
The lighting emphasizes the design while giving it a dramatic effect!
Last Thursday, my friend and I had the pleasure of catching the premier of Prometheus (for free!). I thought it was a pretty cool movie, but besides Michael Fassbender and Logan Marshall-Green’s acting and handsome faces, I was really into their costumes. Janty Yates was the brilliant designer for this movie.
Janty Yates wanted a “sleek and slimline [fit], to avoid the sort of Michelin Man look of the NASA suit.” I personally liked how Elizabeth, played by Nooma Rapace, had a more detailed suit as far as the neon orange piping and a different chest shield. Surprisingly, the helmets are also functional.
It’s that time of month again!
First favourite product of the month is my new school bag. It is The North Face’s Isabella backpack. Back in September when Via and I visited Hye Chung in LA, we noticed her pretty cool backpack and she swore to the man upstairs that this is a really good investment. And if I could put my two cents in, I would have to agree. HOWEVER, it really depends on the user.
I go to CC and because of my schedule, I don’t necessarily have to bring a lot of books at once when I go to class so it is fairly small which is fine by me. Despite its size, it’s very sturdy. My back doesn’t feel uncomfortable when I wear it, which is one of the reasons why I bought it. It has cool compartments and I can surprisingly fit my 13″ Macbook Pro in one of the pockets. I’ll probably do an obligatory “What’s in my school bag?” post soon.
I decided to try a new toner and got one from Origins. They were having a promo which included 3 free samples (one of them not pictured because I forgot, ha). But I’d have to say the toner is great. It’s not too strong in a way that it doesn’t dry out my skin which is good because I having combination skin kinda sucks. The charcoal mask and the micro-dermabrasion exfoliator aren’t my cup of tea, however.
Ahh, the infamous BAGGU bag. I love this bag because not only is it eco-friendly, but it’s just so damn cute!!!! One of these standard bags can hold up to about 50 lbs/3 full bags of groceries if I can recall. They come in all different colours, designs, and sizes. BAGGU also has zipper pouches and backpacks.
Needed a light denim button down so I got one from H&M. A very versatile piece.
Definitely my favourite-favourite of the month. J. Crew’s downtown field jacket. I went to the outlets on Black Friday and copped this for 40% off discounted retail. Great gold accents against a dark olive green. Has a relaxed boyfriend fit! Very happy camper.
ALBUM of the Month
Emily King’s The Seven EP. I don’t know why I haven’t heard of this girl a long time ago. Amazing singer and lyricist. If you like jazz, R&B, and all that smooth funk goodness, I suggest you listen to this album. My personal favourite is “Radio”.
Movie of the Month
Now I know it isn’t Halloween anymore, but I’ve been wanting to watch this for a while. Partly because Rory Culkin is in it and I think he is fantastic (just like the rest of his brothers). Overall, I enjoyed it partly because plot is very unexpected. A few scares and laughs here and there. I mean if you have spare time, go ahead and watch this.
TV SHOW of the Month
I love this show because I think the Pan Am girls are absolutely gorgeous. I have a girl crush on all of them especially Karine Vanasse. She makes me want to take up French again. Besides the fashion and all, I do love the story – a mix of drama, comedy, adventure, action, and romance.
VIDEO of the Month
Just a favourite video in general. Pharrell and Justin Timberlake in the studio working on the song “Take It From Here”. So much talent!
ICON of the Month
Model Victoria Darlington photographed by David Urbanke. She is so beautiful. I love her hair and the fact that she has multiple piercings.

Hope you guys had a great month! Christmas is around the corner so what’s on your wish list?
Hi all, it’s Jireh here! So, I decided to try something new for the blog and start a “Monthly Favourites” edition; that way, the blog doesn’t seem to be dead for a really long time. Fall is shortly ending, and with the on and off weather San Diego has been having, I’m pumped for the transition into winter. I’m a little down in the dumps for the remaining days of October, so I thought it’d be a good time to compile some favourite things of mine that I’ve been loving for the past few months! Let’s start with some products…
MAC Taupe in matte. I love brown/nude shades, so this is a great addition to my growing lipstick collection. Also, a tip for putting lipstick on is to apply primer (I use Too Faced Eyeshadow Insurance) before applying color!
HEMPZ Original Body Moisturizer – a fragrant lotion that actually soothes skin? Get outta town! This lotion is the holy grail. It is also THC-drug free, paraben and gluten free, AND 100% vegan. Ordered mine through Amazon since my mom told me the shop back home is out of stock for them!
STASH Black Earl Grey Tea – I was never an avid fan of tea, coffee, or soda (very rare to see me drink any of these), but I figured I needed some sort of caffeine in my system so I opted for tea and this is one of the flavours I used to order at Cup & Saucer. Just add 1/2 teaspoon of sugar and some milk and I’m good to go.
ALBUM of the MONTH
Now in the span of 1 month, I could be into so many albums and artists, but the one album that I really enjoyed this month is IIOI’s “Proper”. One can still distinguish Evan’s unique style, yet notice some nice progression. Give it a listen for yourself!
MOVIE of the MONTH
October is all about horror films, but the only movie I look forward to watching during this month is Hocus Pocus. (Image from Tumblr)
TV SHOWS of the MONTH
It’s honestly hard to choose only one favourite tv show for this month! Parks and Recreation came back for another great season. FX’s new show American Horror Story is a bit weird…but weird is good! I enjoy the characters Tate and Violet a lot. And last but not least, season 2 of How to Make It in America premiered a few weeks ago and I couldn’t have been any more excited. I’ve been hooked since the first season aired when I was a senior in high school. Bryan Greenberg has never looked so good! (Images from various Tumblrs)
VIDEO of the MONTH

PERSON of the MONTH
Evan Tetreault. A great photographer and a well-dressed man. Check his stuff out!
Anyways, I hope you enjoyed this post! xx
